Traditional modular storage products have not changed much in the last 10 years as compared to industry standard servers or traditional/proprietary controllers that have been suffering from a lack of CPU, memory, or cache. This paper discusses the use of industry standard servers, with an abundance of CPU (multiple quad core processors) and memory (32 GB, 64 GB, etc.) as storage controllers by leveraging industry standard hardware and general purpose software to create a high performance storage architecture at a lower cost versus traditional modular storage systems.
